What is fouling?

Fouling refers to the accumulation of marine organisms (algae, shellfish, microorganisms) that settle on a boat's hull. This natural phenomenon is inevitable as soon as a vessel is afloat: seawater is alive, and a boat's hull represents, for these organisms, an ideal surface to cling to, feed on, and multiply. Depending on the ports, water temperature, or season, this colonization can be very rapid.

It all starts with a thin, almost invisible film, a biological layer called biofilm. Appearing innocuous, this first layer, stimulated by light and photosynthesis, acts like a kind of viscous deposit that forms very quickly on any hull. Once in place, this film facilitates the arrival of more visible organisms: small algae, then thicker algae, and finally shellfish.

The impacts on performance and consumption

Beyond the aesthetic aspect, fouling has direct consequences on your boat's performance:

• Loss of speed: a dirty hull increases water resistance, which slows down navigation.
